It will be Patrick McPherson’s critically-acclaimed Edinburgh Festival Fringe show The Man that will open performances at London’s Lion & Union Theatre from 30 September to 2 October 2020.
In this 60 minutes of sketch-comedy, ‘a one-man comedy interrogating masculinity’, the 23-year-old Patrick dissects and satirises 21st century masculinity and sexuality.
Presented by Beige Company Productions, the show is a brave, different kind of comedy show, approaching what it means to be “the man” from a new direction.
The Man takes the format of an interview process:
Dear applicant, You are invited to the final round of interviews for the position of “The Man”. Guy [played by Patrick] will lead the process for you and your fellow applicants. Through scenes, sketches and speeches, Guy orchestrates this group session, from which only a few individuals will land the “prestigious” position. In a fast-paced hour, he covers key aspects of masculinity, such as limited communication, confusing hyper-sexuality and emotional suppression.
The show returns to London for the first time following its sold-out Edinburgh Fringe 2019 run at Underbelly’s Jersey Theatre. There it received five-star reviews across the board and a sensational article from The Scotsman critic who wrote: “This is beautifully written material, in a brilliantly crafted show, given a pitch-perfect, bravura performance by an extraordinarily talented young man.”
Directed by James Lane, The Man was also a British Comedy Guide Recommended Show in 2019 and one of The Scotsman’s Critics Top Picks for Comedy.
Lion & Union Theatre artistic director David Brady said: “After such a tough six months for our industry and the amazing theatre makers we are privileged to work with, it’s such a joy to be able to reopen The Lion & Unicorn Theatre as we continue in our work to create a destination fringe theatre venue for London. We’ve got some really exciting plans coming up, and we’re more determined than ever to continue to be a bit of a beacon of hope that theatre, and fringe theatre in particular can and will return better than ever before.”
