Taking into consideration the current period of continued uncertainty, and without any insurance to cover further cancellation of a technically complicated and expensive show, the producers of Magic Goes Wrong have announced that they have decided to put back reopening until October 2021 when they hope to re-start at the Vaudeville Theatre without social distancing. Mischief Movie Night will now play at the theatre from 9 December 2020 to 31 January 2021.
An extension to the second lockdown in December or a possible third lockdown in January would jeopardise the longer term future of Magic Goes Wrong which had a strong start to its West End life as the second show of Mischief Theatre’s season. The UK tour of Magic Goes Wrong will open in the regions as soon as practically possible once social distancing has been lifted.
Producer Kenny Wax said: “Alongside the need for Stage 5 of the Culture Secretary’s roadmap allowing us to open up without social distancing and the need for a government backed insurance scheme, audience participation is right at the heart of the experience of Magic Goes Wrong.
“We frequently bring patrons onstage to assist in the illusions as well as performing close magic tricks to them in their seats. This feels out of step with current coronavirus advice on this particular production until social distancing can be relaxed. We feel it is better to postpone the show until a time when it can be presented to its full potential.”
Henry Lewis, company director of Mischief, added: “We are so delighted to be presenting Mischief Movie Night in the West End this Christmas. At a time when so few shows are able to open we are so lucky to be back on stage. At Mischief we believe laughter is very important, especially in tricky times so if you’re in need of a chuckle please make your way to the Vaudeville Theatre where it will be our privilege to perform for you whatever show you would like to see.”
Jonathan Sayer, company director of Mischief, commented: “After touring Mischief Movie Night to a host of socially distanced outdoor venues over the summer we’re so thrilled and lucky to be taking this next step in theatre and the West End’s recovery. We can’t wait to get back on stage indoors and provide some much needed cheer over the festive period.”
Audience capacity has been reduced to comply with Covid-19 Secure guidelines for social distancing plus robust risk mitigation. In addition to hand sanitation, face coverings and track and trace, other measures will include contactless tickets, temperature testing and the deep clean and sanitation of the theatre.
In Mischief Movie Night, the improvised movie live on stage, the audience suggests a genre, location and title and the company’s improvisers bring the show to life, complete with rewinds, fast forwards, directors cuts and a live score.
The cast include Henry Lewis as Not Sure, Dave Hearn as No Idea, Nancy Zamit as Don’t Know Yet and Jonathan Sayer as ???. They will be joined onstage by musicians Yshani Perinpanayagam and Richard Baker. Further casting to be announced. All seats for performances between 9 and 13 December will be priced at £20 as a special reopening offer.
