Brimmed full of energy, personality and songs, this new show written and starring Gina Beck and Neil McDermott is the perfect family treat over the festive period.
The story follows Figgy (Neil McDermott) as he is sent by Santa to help Cupcake (Gina Beck) with her fear of Christmas. From video messages from children explaining why they love Christmas to singing and dancing, the pair try everything possible to get Cupcake over her fear.
It has to be said, that given the difficult year that we have all had – children in particular – this is a show that is wonderfully comforting and reassuring in its intent, highlighting no matter what you are worried about things will be alright in the end. Equally importantly, it is a reminder that no matter what else has happened – let’s all try and hold onto the positive spirit of Christmas.
Set in a cosily designed living room, the whole show is a bundle of energy and joy from start to finish, encapsulated brilliantly in the enthusiastic performances from McDermott and Beck. Both offer the right style of performances that never talks down to the young audience but knows how to deliver plenty of fun along the way – as seen as they encourage the children of the audience to use their imaginations and take part in imaginary snowball fights or eating imaginary mince pies. Together they have a lovely rapport that works really well.
The script itself is filled with humour and playfulness, capturing the festive spirit well, with plenty of interaction to keep young audience members thoroughly engaged. But it is music that really forms the heart of the show, with original song ‘The Elf Who Was Scared of Christmas’ proving to be really charming, while the mini concert at the end leaves the audience feeling upbeat and positive.
Filled with heaps of imagination, The Elf Who Was Scared of Christmas is a wonderfully endearing Christmas show that gets adults and children alike believing in festive magic once again.
