Review of Kylie’s latest album Disco: This has been the first album in ages that I have had constantly playing. It has so many danceable tunes that it is impossible not to like. Favourite tracks include ‘Magic’, ‘Real Groove’ and ‘Monday Blues’.
Review of Mulan, Disney +: I didn’t honestly know what to expect with this live action remake of the beloved animated classic. But despite the lack of songs, it is a highly action-packed film that dazzles with its effects and performances from the cast with a few nice twists as well.
Review of Songs For a New World, The Other Palace (Online): As a champion for online theatre, Lambert Jackson Productions has incredibly managed to put on a number of different shows during this time – but my favourite has to be Songs For a New World – filled with a range of characters and styles of songs that is just simply wonderful to listen to.
Review of A Thousand Ships by Natalie Haynes: Anyone who knows me well will understand that I have a fascination with ancient history and Greek mythology. Which is why this impressive retelling of the Trojan war, told from the perspective of women, impressed me highly. It is a cleverly constructed story.
Review of Sleepless A Musical Romance, Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre: One of the unexpected joys of being allowed into theatres once more was to catch the world premiere of this brand new musical based on the film starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. I didn’t know what to expect but I was impressed with the music and the way in which the story unfolded.
Review of Fantastic Beasts: The Wonder of Nature, Natural History Museum: This was my first trip to the Natural History Museum in years and it really was worth it. This fabulously displayed exhibition really highlighted the myths and legends surrounding magical creatures and how in reality there are plenty with magical qualities.
Review of Tantra: Enlightenment to Revolution, British Museum: Delving deep into a world of philosophy that originated in medieval India was a really fascinating experience. As always, the British Museum handled the subject matter with great delicacy and insight, displaying an astonishing range of objects to explore the topic thoroughly.
Review of Pretty Woman the Musical, Piccadilly Theatre: I know critics came down hard on this production but I really loved the way it translated to the stage from film. The music and the storytelling was perfect as well as being really well cast – yes it is corny but I personally found it romantic.
Review of Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell: while initially I struggled with the style of the book, I soon found myself being drawn into this world that the author created as she explores Shakespeare’s family life – with Shakespeare firmly on the sideline.
Review of The Prom, Netflix: sometimes all you need is a bit of feel-good entertainment and this vibrant film version of the Broadway musical has it in spades. The music, the strong central characters and sheer joy the film exudes is really infectious – what is not to love?
Just a final note from me, this year has been so difficult for all – but Love London Love Culture will be here next year championing the arts and culture in all forms!
